The Northern Michigan University Center for Native American Studies is now in the midst of the implementation phase of the Decolonizing Diet Project. The DDP research subjects have been adhering to their meal and excercise plans since March 25, 2012. While we have put forth great effort to prepare for this phase, we realize that there may be some things that still need tweaking. The master food list is located on the DDP Group Site. We will continue updating food provider information as we go along, and will announce opportunities to join food consultants on various outings as they become available.

We would like to say chi-miigwech (many thanks) to those who have supported our project thus far including Northern Michigan University, the US Forest Service, the Cedar Tree Institute, the Kewenaw Bay Indian Community, and several businesses (please see the list of supporters at the DDP Group Site). If you or your organization would like to donate to this project (whether in the form of food, equipment, or cash), or if you have any questions about the DDP, please contact Dr. Martin Reinhardt, principal investigator, at (906)-227-1397, or email: mreinhar@nmu.edu

We wish everyone the very best on this exciting adventure.

DDP Updates

The journaling document that April Lindala shared with us at the Feb 10th meeting is now posted at the DDP group site. Our next gathering is Thursday, March 8th from 6-8pm at the Grace United Methodist Church fellowship hall which is in the basement of the building. The parking lot around back and down the hill is where you should park and then come in the basement door. This is a DDP food pot luck, so please let us know via the DDP face book site what you are planning to bring if anything. I will go over the data collection information again briefly for those who were not able to make the last session. We hope to have a "grocery list" up at the group site soon that will show where you can get certain DDP foods localy and online from farms and shops. We are starting to get more seeds in now thanks to the USDA National Plant Germplasm System! We will be planting some of these in the NMU greenhouse, but will also be looking to DDP people to start some in their greenhouses and/or windows. I will be making growing boxes out at our school on Saturday and Sunday March 10-11th if anyone wants to come by and help make some. Whatever you help make, you can take (or donate for others). I will start at 1pm on both days and work until sundown. I will give you a tour of the school while you are there also!
