The Northern Michigan University Center for Native American Studies is now in the midst of the implementation phase of the Decolonizing Diet Project. The DDP research subjects have been adhering to their meal and excercise plans since March 25, 2012. While we have put forth great effort to prepare for this phase, we realize that there may be some things that still need tweaking. The master food list is located on the DDP Group Site. We will continue updating food provider information as we go along, and will announce opportunities to join food consultants on various outings as they become available.

We would like to say chi-miigwech (many thanks) to those who have supported our project thus far including Northern Michigan University, the US Forest Service, the Cedar Tree Institute, the Kewenaw Bay Indian Community, and several businesses (please see the list of supporters at the DDP Group Site). If you or your organization would like to donate to this project (whether in the form of food, equipment, or cash), or if you have any questions about the DDP, please contact Dr. Martin Reinhardt, principal investigator, at (906)-227-1397, or email: mreinhar@nmu.edu

We wish everyone the very best on this exciting adventure.

U of M Class Coming to Visit DDP

On the evening of Wednesday, May 23rd, Dr. Scott Herron and his students in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) 455 class at the University of Michigan Biological Station will arive at the Old McDonald Elementary School at KI Sawyer (Marty and Tina's school). They will be spending two nights at the school and joining DDP research subjects on May 24th for a day of foraging, food, and fun. We may forage at the Dukes Woods/Laughing White Fish Falls areas in Skandia, but that has yet to be determined. Regardless of where we actually forage on May 24th, we will meet at the school around 8:30am and head out around 9am. We will plan on eating lunch in the woods. Those DDP research subjects who are also PEIF pass holders that are planning on going to the PEIF DDP class that day should plan to leave the foraging site no later than 2pm so they can make it to NMU in time to join the class. We will be done foraging by 4pm, and will head back to the school so folks can clean up, do a tic check, and start making dinner. We will have a DDP potluck out at the school from 6-8pm. We will plan to finish the day by sitting around the camp fire and maybe playing some music. I will have more details soon.
